What's the weirdest thing you've fished out of your swimming pool?

In our case, I am speaking of the creature on the left...sorry for the potential confusion Nick! I have read that armadillos have notoriously bad vision. This one, who we have affectionately named Armando, met his fate by walking into our swimming pool sometime overnight (reminds me of Grandpa Phil escorting Aunt Toni into the pool! Those readers from outside the family will have to ask Jane for details of that story). Based on Armando's girth and the weight of his body armour, I am guessing that swimming was not on his list of evolutionary gifts (I think armadillos have swimming skills similar to large rocks). Thankfully, Armando's death is not in vain, for he has finally proven to the scientific community that roadkill is not the only method for armadillo death in Texas (armadillos are referred to as "Texas speedbumps" around here).

FHE-Last Week of Christ's Life, Tuesday cont.

Pharisees and Sadducees try to entagle him in tricky questions, but they forget who they are questioning!

Question# 1 By What Authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
Jesus' Response- Matt. 21:24-27 and then he gave three parables directed right at the Pharisees. (Parable of the 2 Sons, Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen, and the Parable of the Royal Marriage Feast)

Question #2 Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar?
Jesus' Response-Matt. 22:18-21

Masaccio, The Tribute Money, fresco, 1427 (Brancacci Chapel, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence)

Question #3 In the resurrection whose wife shall she be?
Jesus' Response- Matt. 22:23-33 and D&C 132:15-16

Question #4 Which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus' response-Matt. 22:37-40

Each time Jesus masterfully confounded their questions, silenced them, and they marvelled at his words, which were obvisously a condemnation upon them.

Family Home Evening (for kelsi)

Five of Them Were Wise, Walter Rane, Musuem of Church History and Art

Last Week of Christ's Mortal Ministry cont.
TUESDAY- (Closes His public ministry, last of the parables, Laments over Jerusalem)

Parable of the 10 virgins"The importance of steadiness and consistency in our spiritual development and progress is beautifully illustrated in the parable of the ten virgins (see Matthew 25:1–13). Ten virgins took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Five of the virgins were wise and took oil in their vessels with their lamps. They were prepared to welcome the bridegroom. The five foolish virgins took their lamps but took no oil with them. The foolish virgins knew they should have oil but procrastinated, were unprepared, and were shut out from the wedding feast.

The oil of preparedness and steadiness is accumulated each day through consistent, wise choices. President Spencer W. Kimball described it this way: “Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps, drop by drop over the years. Fasting, family prayer, home teaching, control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel, studying the scriptures—each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store. Deeds of kindness, payment of offerings and tithes, chaste thoughts and actions, marriage in the covenant for eternity—these, too, contribute importantly to the oil with which we can at midnight refuel our exhausted lamps” (Faith Precedes the Miracle [1972], 255–56).

The key lesson for us to learn from this statement by President Kimball is that deliberate, consistent, and reliable preparation and performance provide essential oil for our lamps. Furthermore, steadfastness is a prime indicator of spiritual maturity.

You and I can also learn much about steady spiritual development from the technique of drip irrigation that is used in many agricultural areas throughout the world. Drip irrigation is sometimes called trickle irrigation and involves dripping water onto the soil at very low rates from a system of small plastic pipes fitted with outlets called emitters or drippers. Unlike surface and sprinkler irrigation, which involves flooding, gushing, or spraying large quantities of water where it may not be needed, drip irrigation applies water close to a plant so that only part of the soil in which the roots grow is wetted. With drip irrigation, applications of water are more focused and more frequent than with the other methods. The steady drips of water sink deep into the ground and provide a high moisture level in the soil wherein plants can flourish.

In like manner, if you and I are focused on receiving consistent drops of spiritual nourishment, then gospel roots can sink deep into our souls, can become firmly established and grounded, and can produce extraordinary and delicious fruit. In a gospel sense, you and I need to implement constant spiritual drip saturation and avoid sporadic and shallow spiritual spurting. Sturdy gospel roots that go deep into rich spiritual soil strengthen and steady us in times of trial and difficulty.

I testify and witness that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. May you and I build our lives upon the foundation of Christ. May we apply correct principles to become steadfast and immovable—solid, firm, resolute, firmly secured, and incapable of being diverted from the path of righteousness—keeping and honoring our covenants and commitments, living worthy and pure lives, and becoming valiant disciples of the Savior."

Ashley Learning to Drive a Stick Shift (December '08)

I often tell my teenagers they drive me nuts!!! but really they are so much fun and i love each one of their personalities. I had to video tape ashley driving because she was so hilarious.

This was actually a couple of months ago but i didn't feel ok with putting it on the blog until ashley actually learned how to drive a stick shift! But now she is driving and actually a very good driver. (of course it is a parent's worse nightmare and i am scared every time she leaves and relieved every time she walks in the door) Disclaimer: it does get a little tense, of course we are talking about ashley who is totally intense and aggressive, but just a warning mom loses her patience too. But for anyone who has ever taught their child to drive understands the fear that comes with it (putting yourself in a car with someone who does not know how to drive, scary) and if you don't have teenagers yet, just wait!!!

For Kelsi Family Night 2/9

Scourging the Money-changers from the Temple EL GRECO (1541-1614)
National Gallery, London

Monday

Cursing of the Barren Fig Tree

Second Cleansing of the Temple
Jesus went to the temple and again found the moneychagers doing business in His Father's house. He drove them out of the temple, overturning their tables and chairs. He stopped them from carrying their baskets and other containers through the temple. "It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of theives" (Matthew 21:13) After he cleansed his holy house, he healed the bline and the lame.

Family Home Evening Question????
How do you show reverence and respect for the Temple?

Family Night

The Entry into Jersusalem GIOTTO (1266-1337) Arena Chapel, Padua

kelsi we sure miss you at family night, we started a new set of lessons and did not want you to feel left out, we are studing the last week of Christ's mortal ministry (we are studying this in our relief society gospel study class so i thought we might as well take advantage of it for family night) so here is the first lesson so you don't feel left out!

Christ's takes His final journey into Jerusalem. He sends two of his apostles out to obtain a colt for Him that He might ride into the city, as was custom for ancient kings, of course Christ is the "King of Kings" The apostles did, and things occurred just as the Savior said they would. They found a colt, untied him and when the owners asked why they were taking the colt, the apostles simply said the Lord had need of it and they allowed them to take the colt. The apostles placed their robes upon the colt and as Jesus rode into the city he paused at the top of the Mount of Olives, and wept over the city because he knew that soon the city would be destroyed including the great temple. When Jesus reached the gates of the city He was met by a great mulitude of His disciples. "And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest." (Luke 19:36-38)

Family Home Evening Question???
How do you worship and show your devotion to the Savior today?

Grandma Winnie 1919-2009

Grandma Winnie was a strong, adventurous woman, who showed her love for you through her toughness. She had high expectations for her children and grandchildren which I contribute to much of the family’s success. Grandma had a way of driving you to do your best. You wanted to be your best around her and make her proud. When you did she would give you a little wink with a smile and you just knew you were on her good list. She was not shy to let you know when she did not approve of someone’s actions and she would elbow you and whisper something a little smart-aleck about someone and then give you that devilish smile and a little giggle. It was good to sometimes feel like a part of grandma’s inner circle.
Of course if you ever messed up she let you know it too. She had away of keeping you in line. I remember one time when I was very young, maybe 4 or 5 years old and I was not getting what I wanted, so I was throwing a fit about it and Grandma had enough of my crying and just quietly leaned down and told me that I was too pretty of a girl to cry and that when I cried my face got very ugly. I don’t know if it was the command of her voice the strength of her character or my desire to please her but from that time on, I could never really cry and throw a fit without thinking what grandma told me, how ugly my face became when I cried!
I don’t know if all of her grandchildren felt this desire for Grandma Winnie’s approval but I did and I think it made me a better person. It is sad to me that as generations pass that honor, respect, and doing our very best is replaced with other more modern ways of thinking. My children often tell me to RELAX mom. Grandma Winnie commanded respect and honor and she deserved it. I think Grandma understood that respect would lead you to a sense of your own self worth and confidence.
She was one of the most talented women I knew. She could sew exquisitely, needlepoint, crochet, make stain glass; there really was nothing she could not do. Who can forget the “Go Go” boots and hippie leather vest we got one year for Christmas! I remember staying with Grandma for a week by myself to learn how to be a good homemaker. I was about 9 or 10 years old and she taught me everything from how to dust properly, crochet, cook and I spent a lot of time washing her hair and curling it which became my responsibility whenever she came to visit!
Grandma was the best homemaker. Her house was always neat and perfect, she was a wonderful cook, she canned fruits, baked pies and we still have not been able to perfect her thanksgiving gravy, although Kenny is getting close. Who could forget getting fudge every year for Christmas especially the year we were all starving because mom would not let us eat until dinner was ready and when we opened grandma’s gift of fudge we dove into it like hungry pigs before we realized she had made the fudge too early in the season and there was mold on the fudge! Who can forget her homemade pizza which ended up all over the side of the car from me throwing up because dad would not stop when I got sick on the road trip home from Kanab.
Of course there was many things I enjoyed and remember about grandma, trips to Kanab, going on Tim’s boat at Lake Powell, having Grandma live with us, Family Reunions, spending holidays together, the racetrack, always having to stop in Vegas so she could gamble, camping and TR Reunions! My most personal favorite memory is her always calling me “Janie.” There are only a couple of people who still call me “Janie” and I will miss her sound of her voice calling me by name.
Grandma was an extremely hard worker and when she had a task to do she would not rest until that task was done. This is most evident in her family history work. She worked for years, hour upon hours working on family history; again we have much to be grateful for because of her diligence and hard work. What an example to all of us!
The most important thing she did can be seen in the life of her two daughters.
She raised two of the sweetest and unselfish women I have ever known. My aunt Marilyn is one of the warmest, kindest people you will ever meet. Not to mention intelligent, creative, and fun. And of course my mother Carolyn who was a very patient and loving mother spent her life serving her family. I couldn’t have asked for a better mother and I’m sure Grandma Winnie had something to do with that. Grandma was a mother of two beautiful daughters Marilyn and Carolyn and I was always amazed how much these two sisters loved each other. I never heard my mother say an unkind word for her sister. She loved her sister very much and their relationship has always been a great example to me of what sisters should be. Again I’m sure Grandma Winnie has to take some credit for them, and the type of women and mothers and friends they were. Grandma did not always show her emotions she would rather just tell you exactly how she felt. But when mom died, I watched her grieve for her daughter it was clear her emotions ran deep and truly losing her daughter broke her heart. It was almost too much for her to bear. She told me quietly that sometimes she just lays in bed and still cries about mom.
When I heard of Grandma passing on, I immediately thought of her reunion with mom and what a sweet moment that would have been. I wish I could have been a witness to that reunion.
Grandma Winnie was a woman who taught her descendents that the most important thing in life is love of family. She was a loyal TR patron; she loved her descendents as well as her ancestors. She was able to turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:6)
