Texas Homecoming
Ashley got asked to HOMECOMING this week, her date was very clever and put flowers on the doorstep one morning as she left for seminary....with a note that said look for something on your way to seminary......As they drove to seminary there were signs lined up along the side of the road that said....Ashley.....will you....go 2.....Home.....coming.....with me.....codi!
of course she said yes!!! and was very excited!
In Texas they take their football very seriously and Homecoming is no different! It is a tradition here in Texas to make "Mums" for the Homecoming game. It began in the 1920's as a simple chrysanthemum corsage with a few ribbons hanging down worn by girlfriends or mothers. Over the years, like everything in Texas it became bigger and bigger! The version today is a big artificial Mum flower draped in yards of colorful ribbons, bells, and sparkly letters. The new tradition is to ask a girl to homecoming, and the boy makes her a MUM and she makes her date a "GARTER" which is a small version of a mum corsage worn on his arm! You personalize the Mum or Garter with trinkets or other embellishments that surround their sport they play or if they are in band etc... They are made in your school's colors unless you are a Senior and yours is done in white and silver. One other tradition is you put your name and your date's name on ribbon. The following article explains it "the Homecoming Mum has become nothing but big and flashy—the gaudier the better." http://uniquemumsot.com/index.php/Mum-History.html
So you wear the mum or garter to school the day of homecoming, you go to the football game that night with your date, wearing your mum or garter and after the big game you hang it in your room as a keepsake! Isn't Ashley's Mum amazing, she was so surprised how big it was! The next night is the Homecoming Dance where you go with your date dressed up nice!
To someone not born in TEXAS it seems very silly at first but you quickly see how much fun it is! We had alot of fun making Ashley's date his garter, thanks to some help from a native Texan friend. He plays Tennis at Marcus and we know ashley will have a great time this weekend at HOMECOMING! I will put up more pictures later!

BYU vs OU Football Game
We went down to the new Cowboy stadium in Arlington, it is awesome! Hung out with Jim, Julie, Jeanna, Matt, Jenna, Gifford and his family at a tailgating party in the parking lot! I think we were the only BYU tailgaters, everyone else was covered in red! OU is only about a 3 hour drive from Dallas so i think i heard there were like 20,000OU fans and 6000 BYU fans!

California Visitors!
I was so sad to not make the reunion this year! that is why when julie called and said she and jim were coming to dallas to go the BYU game we were so excited!
If you have not heard(since matt and jeanna are so modest!) Brett is playing football for BYU! He was only 2 out of 20 freshman who made the traveling team! Isn't that awesome! We were lucky enough to have Jim and Julie come stay with us when BYU played OU at the new Cowboy Stadium in Arlington! We had a fun visit with them, we just love them and then got to hang out with Jeanna, Matt and Jenna and Maddox at the BYU Fireside the players hold everytime they come. It was a great fireside and lots of fun to see family since we missed the reunion!
Of course we had to take a picture with our favorite Tight-End....Dennis Pitta 32
Nick says pitta caught every pass because he shook his hand, whatever!

Blessings
Another example the Lord hears our prayers and answers them, i remember specifically asking the Lord to protect Kelsi and Ashley this Friday, to keep them safe from harm. I would be foolish to not recognize my prayer was answered. Yes, our little cute bug was destroyed, we are down one car, and ashley had a horrible experience....
But Ashley was kept safe, only a large burn under her arm from the airbag explosion, and a little brusied ego. Another lesson to look for the blessings even in accidents!
What happened: ashley was driving home from gymnastics, she was exhausted and left a little early which put her in more traffic, took a second to look at a sign on the side of the road and the next thing she knew the car in front of her, a big pick-up truck (what else we are in Texas) had slammed on his brakes and she rear-ended him and then the weird thing about it was the car caught on fire! Ashley was very shaken up by the whole thing but also recognizes her blessings!
