Texas Homecoming

Ashley got asked to HOMECOMING this week, her date was very clever and put flowers on the doorstep one morning as she left for seminary....with a note that said look for something on your way to seminary......As they drove to seminary there were signs lined up along the side of the road that said....Ashley.....will you....go 2.....Home.....coming.....with me.....codi!
of course she said yes!!! and was very excited!

In Texas they take their football very seriously and Homecoming is no different! It is a tradition here in Texas to make "Mums" for the Homecoming game. It began in the 1920's as a simple chrysanthemum corsage with a few ribbons hanging down worn by girlfriends or mothers. Over the years, like everything in Texas it became bigger and bigger! The version today is a big artificial Mum flower draped in yards of colorful ribbons, bells, and sparkly letters. The new tradition is to ask a girl to homecoming, and the boy makes her a MUM and she makes her date a "GARTER" which is a small version of a mum corsage worn on his arm! You personalize the Mum or Garter with trinkets or other embellishments that surround their sport they play or if they are in band etc... They are made in your school's colors unless you are a Senior and yours is done in white and silver. One other tradition is you put your name and your date's name on ribbon. The following article explains it "the Homecoming Mum has become nothing but big and flashy—the gaudier the better." http://uniquemumsot.com/index.php/Mum-History.html

So you wear the mum or garter to school the day of homecoming, you go to the football game that night with your date, wearing your mum or garter and after the big game you hang it in your room as a keepsake! Isn't Ashley's Mum amazing, she was so surprised how big it was! The next night is the Homecoming Dance where you go with your date dressed up nice!

To someone not born in TEXAS it seems very silly at first but you quickly see how much fun it is! We had alot of fun making Ashley's date his garter, thanks to some help from a native Texan friend. He plays Tennis at Marcus and we know ashley will have a great time this weekend at HOMECOMING! I will put up more pictures later!

Oh my goodness I love it! What a great explanation. To be honest I've never quite understood it... but now I do. I am so happy for Ashley! What a fun, fun time of life!

I can't stop laughing. I think Ashley's "mum" is bigger than she is! Only in Texas. What a cute way to be asked to Homecoming. Hope she has fun and be sure to post lots of pictures!
